When Major League Soccer (MLS) was created in the mid-1990s, Washington, DC was awarded the first franchise in 1994. Two years later D.C. United began playing, and led by superstars such as Eddie Pope, Jaime Moreno and Marco Etcheverry, won three out of the first four MLS Cups. Two of those championships were won under former coach Bruce Arena, who went on to become the head coach of the U.S. men's national soccer team. As winner of four MLS Cups, D.C. United is the second most decorated soccer team in league history behind the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The team has played its home games at RFK Stadium since 1996, a historic stadium where the Washington Redskins, Washington Senators and Washington Nationals have all played at one time during its 50-plus years. The 2017 season will be the Black-and-Red's final at RFK Stadium, as they are slated to open a new state-of-the-art stadium, Audi Field, near the Southwest Waterfront in 2018.

Match days at RFK Stadium begin with the team’s official Lot 8 tailgate, which starts two hours prior to kickoff. The tailgate features $4 beer specials, food trucks, live music, games and picnic tables to relax at.

Stadium gates open one hour prior to kickoff. All fans are welcome in the Field Level Fan Zone where a new standing room area enables you to watch the match from right behind the end line. The Fan Zone also features a food truck, beverage stand, picnic area and lawn games including cornhole and bocce. The Fan Zone is accessible from the concourse at section 222.
